Description

This 1988 Barolo from the producer Barni is a testament to the legendary aging potential of the Nebbiolo grape in the Piedmont region. Crafted in a traditional style, this wine has developed the complex, tertiary aromas that only decades of patient cellaring can provide. Upon opening, it reveals an enchanting bouquet of dried rose petals, forest floor, and the classic 'tar' note often associated with mature Barolo, underscored by hints of tobacco and sweet spice.

On the palate, the wine demonstrates the structure for which this iconic appellation is known. While the youthful vibrancy of fruit has evolved, it retains a core of dried red cherry and plum, integrated with velvety, though still firm, tannins and refined acidity. This is a contemplative wine that rewards slow consumption; we highly recommend decanting it for at least an hour to allow the bouquet to fully unfurl and the sediment to settle.

As a wine of this age, it is a magnificent partner for rich, slow-cooked Piedmontese cuisine. It pairs exceptionally well with dishes featuring earthy flavors, such as a traditional Tajarin pasta with shaved white truffle, braised beef, or mature, hard cheeses like Castelmagno. This bottle is not merely a drink, but an experience of history—a beautiful example of a classic vintage from the heart of the Langhe.
