Red wine | Ribera del Duero, Spain
Milsetentayseis Tinto (often referred to as '1076') is a remarkable expression of high-altitude viticulture in Spain’s prestigious Ribera del Duero region. The name itself, meaning '1076', pays homage to the extreme elevation of the vineyards in Fuentenebro, which sit at over 1,000 meters above sea level. This unique terroir, characterized by ancient vines and mineral-rich soils—a rare blend of red clay, limestone, quartz, feldspar, and mica—shapes a wine of exceptional character, tension, and precision.
Crafted by the renowned team behind Alma de Carraovejas, this project focuses on capturing the pure, vibrant essence of its origin. The wine is primarily composed of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) with a small, traditional contribution of the white variety Albillo, reflecting the diversity of the historical vineyards. In the cellar, the winemaking process is meticulous; grapes are hand-harvested and double-selected before being vinified in separate, small-format vessels—including concrete, wood, and clay amphorae—to respect the nuances of each plot. It then undergoes a patient aging process, spending 18 months in French oak barrels and foudres, followed by at least 12 months in the bottle before release.
In the glass, the Milsetentayseis Tinto displays an intense, deep cherry color with violet hues. The nose is complex and sophisticated, offering a fragrant profile of ripe red and black fruits, complemented by distinct mineral notes and a subtle, well-integrated spice from the oak. On the palate, it strikes a perfect balance between its powerful structure and an elegant, refreshing acidity. Its silky tannins lead to a long, persistent finish that echoes the unique stony landscape of Fuentenebro.
This wine is a superb choice for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate wines that evolve beautifully over time. It pairs exquisitely with traditional Spanish fare such as roasted lamb (lechazo asado), grilled red meats, game, or mature cheeses like Manchego. Because of its concentration and complexity, decanting it for about 30 minutes before serving at 16–17°C is highly recommended, allowing the wine to fully open up and reveal its true depth. Milsetentayseis Tinto is not just a wine; it is an ambitious, soul-stirring project that brings the rugged beauty of high-altitude Spanish viticulture directly to your glass.
