Description

The Cálem 1999 Vintage Port is a distinguished expression of one of Portugal's most iconic wine houses. Founded in 1859 by António Alves Cálem in Vila Nova de Gaia, the Cálem winery has built a global reputation for its entrepreneurial spirit—historically exporting Port to Brazil in exchange for exotic woods, a legacy immortalized by the caravel ship featured on every bottle label. This 1999 Vintage Port hails from the Douro Valley, a UNESCO-protected landscape and one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions, known as the 'Port Wine Cathedral.'

Crafted from a masterful blend of traditional varieties including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca, this wine underwent careful maceration and foot-treading in lagares to ensure deep extraction of color and tannin. Upon reaching the desired sweetness, the fermentation was halted through fortification with grape spirit, resulting in a rich, fortified wine of exceptional character.

On the nose, the 1999 Vintage presents a sophisticated bouquet of dried fruits, exotic spices, and subtle, well-integrated notes of oak. On the palate, it is remarkably velvety and complex, offering an intensity that evolves into a persistent, enduring finish. While it possesses the firm structure characteristic of a great Port, the years of bottle aging have allowed the tannins to soften, making it a beautiful experience for the senses.

To fully appreciate this bottle, we recommend decanting it for at least an hour to allow the wine to breathe and to remove any natural sediment. Serve it at a cool room temperature (16–18°C) in a tulip-shaped glass. It is an exceptional partner for intense desserts—think caramel fondant, dark chocolate, or a rich tarte tatin—as well as a selection of medium-strength aged cheeses. Whether you are looking to commemorate a special occasion or adding a piece of Portuguese winemaking history to your cellar, the Cálem 1999 Vintage Port is a testament to the artistry of the Douro Valley.

Your Notes

A departure from my usual light reds. Deeply complex, with dried fruit and velvet tannins. A monumental, structured Port that commands attention. Reminiscent of a fine Taylor’s vintage.
