Red wine | Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux, France
Château Coufran, often dubbed the "Pomerol of the Médoc," offers a unique expression of the Haut-Médoc appellation. Nestled in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, near Pauillac, this family-owned estate has been crafting wines since 1924. Unusually for the region, Merlot dominates the blend (85%) complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (15%), resulting in a softer, more approachable style compared to its Cabernet-Sauvignon-heavy neighbors. The 60-year-old vines, rooted in Graves soil, contribute to the wine's complexity and depth.
Imagine aromas of ripe red and black fruits, such as plum and blackberry, intertwined with subtle notes of cedar, tobacco, and a hint of earthiness. On the palate, Château Coufran is medium-bodied with velvety tannins and a smooth texture. The Merlot dominance provides a plushness, while the Cabernet Sauvignon lends structure and backbone. The wine unfolds with layers of flavor, showcasing a harmonious balance between fruit, oak, and terroir.
Why choose Château Coufran? It's a delightful departure from the classic, often austere, Haut-Médoc profiles. It’s the wine to enjoy now or cellar for a few years, developing further complexity. It is also a great example of a well crafted Bordeaux that is accessible and enjoyable at a reasonable price, a rare find in this renowned region.
Château Coufran’s elegant and balanced character makes it an ideal companion for a wide range of dishes. Its medium body and soft tannins pair beautifully with roasted poultry, such as duck or chicken, as well as grilled or roasted red meats like lamb or beef tenderloin. The wine's subtle earthy notes also complement mushroom-based dishes, such as risotto or pasta with truffle oil. Try it with hard cheeses like aged cheddar or Gruyère to enhance the flavors and textures of both wine and cheese. Decant for at least 15 minutes before serving at around 18°C to allow the aromas and flavors to fully express themselves. A great selection and a must have!
