Description

The 2016 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from Fattoria La Valentina is a masterclass in regional identity and artisanal restraint. Located in the hills of Spoltore near Pescara, the Di Properzio brothers have crafted a wine that avoids the common pitfalls of excessive extraction or heavy-handed oaking, opting instead to let the authentic character of the Montepulciano grape shine. In the glass, this vintage displays a deep ruby color with subtle purple hues. The nose is inviting and classic, led by notes of black cherry, plum, and blackberry, perfectly balanced by a savory backbone of Mediterranean herbs, clove, and a touch of earthiness. On the palate, it strikes a sophisticated balance; it is velvety and approachably soft, yet possesses a structured backbone that gives it longevity. Its finish is remarkably persistent, leaving lingering traces of liquorice and spice that invite another sip.

This is not a wine trying to be a Tuscan powerhouse; it is a proud, honest expression of Abruzzo. Its natural acidity and refined tannins make it an incredibly versatile companion at the dinner table. It is the perfect partner for traditional regional fare like arrosticini (Abruzzese lamb skewers), rich ragù, porchetta, or grilled meats. For a vegetarian pairing, it works beautifully with hearty pasta dishes or aged pecorino cheese. Whether you are hosting a formal dinner or simply enjoying a weeknight meal, this bottle offers a level of quality and craftsmanship that is rarely found at this price point. With a few years of development already behind it, the 2016 vintage has reached a beautiful state of readiness—decant it for about 30 minutes to allow the bouquet to fully unfold, and you will experience a wine that is both a reliable favorite and a genuine delight.

Your Notes

Usually I stick to crisp whites, but this was a pleasant surprise. Velvety with nice dark fruit and spice—very drinkable and balanced. Might actually need to branch out more often!
