Red wine | Rioja, Spain
Indulge in the storied elegance of the Rioja region with this exquisite Académico Gran Reserva 2016. Hailing from the esteemed Bodegas Heras Cordón, a winery renowned for its deep commitment to quality and tradition—and famously recognized as a supplier to the Vatican—this wine is a masterpiece of Spanish winemaking. Produced primarily from the noble Tempranillo grape, this Gran Reserva has undergone a meticulous aging process, spending at least 24 months in carefully selected oak barrels followed by an extended period of maturation in the bottle to achieve perfect harmony and complexity.
Upon pouring, you are greeted by a deep, ruby-red hue that signals the richness within. The nose is immediately captivating, offering a sophisticated bouquet of classic Rioja aromas: sweet vanilla and toasted oak harmoniously layered with ripe red berry fruits, subtle hints of leather, and faint balsamic notes. On the palate, the wine is remarkably poised. It strikes an elegant balance between power and finesse, with silky, well-integrated tannins supporting flavors of dark cherry, plum, and warm baking spices, rounded out by tertiary notes of tobacco and cedar. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a gentle, savory impression that invites another sip.
This wine is not just a drink; it is an experience that thrives on the table. It is the perfect companion for traditional Spanish cuisine. We highly recommend pairing it with chuletillas al sarmiento (lamb chops grilled over vine shoots), slow-roasted meats, or a rich, aged Manchego cheese. Because of its maturity and structure, it is also a magnificent 'fireplace wine' to be enjoyed slowly on its own. Whether you are hosting a sophisticated dinner or looking to elevate a quiet evening at home, the Académico Gran Reserva delivers the authentic, timeless character of Rioja. Its refined profile and excellent balance make it an essential addition to any cellar, offering a drinking experience that is both accessible and deeply rewarding.
Classic Rioja! Vanilla, red fruit, and a hint of leather. Beautifully balanced and aged. Reminds me of a Lopez de Heredia. Very enjoyable.
