Red wine | Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy
The Pèppoli Chianti Classico is a celebrated expression of Tuscany, crafted by the historic Marchesi Antinori family. First produced in 1985, this wine has become a quintessential modern Chianti Classico, renowned for its ability to balance the complex structure of a traditional reserva with the vibrant, approachable fruit profile of a younger wine. The grapes are sourced from the Pèppoli estate, located in a unique microclimate where rocky, mineral-rich soils and east-northeast facing vineyards create the ideal conditions for ripening Sangiovese to its fullest potential.
In the glass, it displays a brilliant ruby-red color. The nose is highly expressive, opening with intense aromas of fresh red cherries, strawberries, and pomegranates, elegantly layered with subtle floral notes of violets and hints of spice and oak from its nine months of maturation in large Slavonian oak barrels. On the palate, it is lively and harmonious, featuring a soft, mouth-filling entry followed by a balanced mid-palate of red fruit, dusty earth, and refined tannins. The finish is persistent, savory, and clean, making it exceptionally food-friendly.
This wine is a versatile companion at the dinner table. Its refreshing acidity and supple structure make it the perfect partner for classic Italian cuisine. It excels when paired with rich dishes like ragù alla bolognese, traditional Bistecca alla Fiorentina, or grilled lamb chops. It also pairs beautifully with medium-aged cheeses, mushroom risotto, and hearty tomato-based pasta dishes. Whether you are hosting a formal dinner or enjoying a casual meal, the Pèppoli Chianti Classico offers an authentic taste of Tuscany that consistently over-delivers, making it a must-have for any wine enthusiast seeking quality, elegance, and heritage in every sip.
A good intro to Chianti Classico! Cherries and raspberries are definitely there. I'm still working on identifying tannins, but these seem ripe. Enjoyable!
