Red wine | Puglia, Italy
Morati Appassimento is a delightful red wine from the Puglia region of Italy, crafted by the esteemed Morati winery. This Appassimento-style wine offers a unique tasting experience, characterized by the appassimento process where grapes are partially dried before fermentation, concentrating their flavors and sugars.
The wine is typically made from a blend of local red grapes, most commonly Negroamaro and Primitivo, which are known for their rich fruit and spice notes. This blend results in a full-bodied wine with a deep ruby color, brimming with aromas of ripe red and dark fruits such as cherries, plums, and blackberries, intertwined with hints of spice and a touch of dried fruit from the appassimento process.
On the palate, Morati Appassimento is dry with soft tannins, offering a smooth and velvety texture. The concentrated fruit flavors are beautifully balanced with a subtle acidity, making it a versatile wine suitable for various occasions. The finish is long and warm, leaving a pleasant aftertaste of fruit and spice. With its alcohol content of around 14.5%, this wine offers a robust and satisfying experience.
Morati is a winery that embodies the winemaking traditions of Puglia, focusing on producing high-quality wines that reflect the region's unique terroir. Their Appassimento is a testament to their dedication and expertise in crafting wines that are both enjoyable and representative of their origin.
Ideally served at a temperature of 16°C, Morati Appassimento pairs excellently with rich, hearty dishes such as grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and aged cheeses. It is also a wonderful companion to pasta dishes with robust tomato sauces or meaty ragus. The wine's depth and complexity make it suitable for both casual meals and more formal gatherings. For an even smoother experience, allowing the wine to breathe for about 15 minutes before serving will help to fully open up its aromas and flavors. The screw cup closure makes it easy to open and enjoy anytime, without the need for a corkscrew. Try it with oven baked salmon or pizza.
A bit too much ripe fruit for my taste, but those soft tannins are lovely. I'd pair it with a hearty mushroom lasagna. Interesting!
