Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is Ornellaia’s second wine. It is a genuine second wine, blending the characteristics of a great terroir with the elegance and complexity which distinguish Ornellaia. Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot, depending on the vintage. This wine combines approachability and a depth of flavour with proven ageing potential.
The 2020 growing season began with a mild, rainy winter that guaranteed a good supply of water in the soil. Budbreak began on time, but the vine growth slowed down sharply after a cold snap in late March, which brought temperatures below zero. Spring continued with normal temperatures, and flowering took place in the last week of May, under ideal conditions. From mid-June onwards, the weather was hot and dry, with temperatures reaching peaks of over 35 °C for several consecutive days. The veraison occurred in mid-July, and the grapes showed a high concentration of sugar and anthocyanins. Thanks to the water reserves accumulated during the winter, the vines did not suffer from water stress, and the ripening process continued regularly. The harvest began at the end of August with the Merlot grapes and was completed in early October with the Petit Verdot.
Serving Suggestions:
Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes. Its structure and tannins make it a great accompaniment to roasted or grilled meats, such as lamb, beef, and game. It also complements hearty pasta dishes with rich sauces, such as ragu or Bolognese. For cheese pairings, consider aged cheeses like Parmesan or Pecorino. The wine's elegance also makes it a good match for dishes with earthy flavors, such as mushroom risotto or truffle-infused dishes. It is advisable to decant at least 30 minutes before serving.
