Description

The Sagrado Grande Reserva Field Blend 2019 is a magnificent expression of the Douro Valley’s unique terroir. Produced by Quinta do Sagrado, a historic estate in the heart of the Pinhão region, this wine honors centuries of tradition. The vines, some of which are very old, grow on iconic 'socalcos' (terraces) with Letter A classification—the highest quality ranking in the Douro. This 'field blend' is crafted by selecting indigenous varieties like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinto Cão, which are traditionally foot-trodden in granite lagares to ensure gentle extraction. After fermentation, the wine matures for 18 months in French oak barrels, resulting in a wine of profound complexity and structure.

On the nose, it offers powerful and expressive aromas of ripe blackberry and blueberry, beautifully interwoven with notes of toasted oak and sweet spices. On the palate, it is opulent and well-balanced; the initial burst of dark fruit—specifically blackberry and cassis—is followed by subtle, sophisticated layers of chocolate and toasted oak. While it possesses a firm structure and excellent acidity that provide great aging potential, its tannins are refined and round, making it remarkably approachable even now. This is a serious, elegant red wine that embodies the soul of Portuguese winemaking. To fully appreciate its depth, we recommend decanting it for about 30 minutes before serving at a temperature of 16-18°C. It is an ideal companion for rich, flavorful dishes; pair it with oven-roasted red meats, succulent lamb, game dishes like venison, or a selection of strong, aged cheeses. Whether you are adding it to your cellar for future enjoyment or opening it to elevate a special dinner, this Sagrado Grande Reserva is a testament to the excellence of the Douro region.
