Red wine | Douro, Portugal
Meandro do Vale Meão 2021 is a masterclass in balance from the esteemed Quinta do Vale Meão, a historic estate in the Douro Superior sub-region of Portugal. This wine is the 'second label' of the legendary Quinta do Vale Meão estate, offering a more approachable yet deeply serious expression of the unique schist-soiled terroir of the Meão Valley. Crafted by the renowned F. Olazabal & Filhos, the grapes—a traditional Douro blend dominated by Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca—are hand-harvested and traditionally trodden by foot in granite lagares before undergoing careful fermentation and aging for 14 months in French oak barrels.
On the nose, it offers a fragrant, expressive bouquet of ripe dark berries, blackberries, and plums, intertwined with delicate floral notes and subtle hints of spice and cocoa. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, striking a perfect chord between intense, juicy fruit and a solid, structural backbone of polished tannins. The freshness, characteristic of this high-quality vintage, leads to a long, complex, and refreshing finish. This wine is an exceptional food companion; its intensity and structure make it an ideal pairing for grilled meats, hearty game dishes like venison or wild boar, and aged cheeses. Whether enjoyed now after a short decanting period or held for a few years to allow further softening, Meandro do Vale Meão stands as a benchmark for quality and value in the Douro region, reflecting the rich legacy of D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira's iconic estate.
