On the nose, expect enticing aromas of dark fruit such as blackberry and plum, intertwined with subtle hints of spice and floral notes. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, with concentrated flavors of ripe fruit, well-integrated tannins, and a refreshing acidity. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and balance. The wine benefits from decanting for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the aromas and flavors to fully develop. Serve at around 16°C to fully appreciate its complexity.
This wine is best enjoyed with rich and flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as lamb or beef. The wine's structure and tannins also make it a great match for hearty stews and game dishes. If you're looking for a cheese pairing, opt for aged cheeses with bold flavors. If you want a true, local experience, try pairing this red wine with typical portuguese cuisine such as Cozido à Portuguesa or Arroz de Pato. The Quinta do Vesuvio is also a great wine to enjoy on its own, as it is complex and rewarding on its own.
Quinta do Vesuvio has long been regarded as one of the Douro Valley's greatest estates and is now widely considered one of Portugal’s very finest vineyards. Andrew James Symington acquired Quinta do Vesuvio in 1989, fulfilling a long-held family ambition to own one of the iconic Douro estates. The Quinta had been owned by the Guedes family since the mid-19th Century. Vesuvio is unique in that it is still a gravity-operated winery. At harvest time, the grapes are hand-picked and carefully sorted, before being gently trodden in traditional lagares. This labor-intensive process ensures that only the best grapes are used to make the wine, and that the flavors are extracted gently. The grapes are gently crushed and the juice ferments naturally, without the addition of commercial yeasts. The resulting wine is aged in French oak barrels, which impart subtle flavors and aromas.
