Red wine | Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy
The Ruffino Riserva Ducale Chianti Classico is a historic icon of Tuscan winemaking, first released in 1927 as an homage to the Duke of Aosta. This 2021 vintage embodies the classic, sophisticated character that has made Ruffino a benchmark for the region. Crafted primarily from Sangiovese, with subtle additions of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it undergoes a meticulous aging process—24 months in a combination of large oak casks, stainless steel, and concrete, followed by at least three months of bottle aging.
Upon pouring, you are greeted by an intense ruby red hue that hints at the wine's depth. The nose is a complex, elegant symphony of floral notes like violet, perfectly intertwined with rich red fruit aromas of cherry, plum, and wild berries. As it breathes, layers of tobacco, white pepper, and a subtle flinty minerality emerge, showcasing the authentic terroir of Chianti Classico. On the palate, the wine is beautifully balanced—full-bodied yet remarkably velvety, with gentle, well-integrated tannins supported by a lively, signature Sangiovese acidity. The finish is long, persistent, and refreshing, leaving a pleasant trace of rosemary and spice that invites another sip.
This wine is a quintessential food pairing partner, particularly well-suited for classic Italian fare. It shines alongside grilled red meats, traditional roast beef, or game such as rabbit. For a truly elevated experience, pair it with pasta dishes featuring rich ragù or hearty tomato-based sauces like Amatriciana, which elegantly soften the wine and highlight its fruity complexity. To enjoy this wine at its peak, we recommend decanting it for at least two hours before serving at a cellar temperature of approximately 18°C. Whether you are hosting a formal dinner or simply celebrating the art of fine wine, the Riserva Ducale is a timeless choice that never fails to impress.
Not bad. Cherry and plum are there, but a bit too earthy for my liking. Expected more elegance, less leather. Still, decent.
