Red wine | Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, France
This bottle presents a classic Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from the challenging yet rewarding 2017 vintage. Hailing from the prestigious Right Bank of Bordeaux, this wine is predominantly composed of Merlot, which provides a plush, velvety texture, complemented by Cabernet Franc, which adds structural elegance and a subtle herbaceous complexity. On the nose, it offers an inviting array of dark fruit—specifically ripe plums and blackberries—intermingled with the refined scents of cedar and a hint of tobacco, characteristic of well-integrated oak aging. On the palate, the wine is dry and medium-to-full-bodied, showcasing a harmonious balance between its ripe fruit core and fine-grained, elegant tannins. The finish is persistent and refined, leaving a lingering impression of dark berry fruit and a touch of savory spice.
Saint-Émilion is renowned for its limestone-clay terroir, which imparts a unique minerality and depth to the wines produced here. As a 'Grand Cru' designated wine, it reflects a commitment to lower yields and higher quality standards than standard regional wines. The 2017 vintage was marked by significant spring frosts, which made production difficult; however, skilled winemakers produced wines of great charm and approachability. This particular wine is an excellent example of accessible French elegance, making it a versatile companion for the dinner table.
Regarding food pairings, this wine finds its perfect match with hearty, umami-rich dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted lamb with herbs, duck breast with a cherry reduction, or grilled entrecôte steak. Its moderate tannins also make it a wonderful partner for mature, hard cheeses like Comté or aged cheddar. To enjoy this wine at its best, we recommend serving it at a cellar temperature of approximately 17°C. While it is drinking beautifully now, it has the structure to evolve gracefully for another few years in the cellar. Whether you are hosting a formal dinner or looking for a sophisticated addition to a quiet evening meal, this Saint-Émilion Grand Cru offers a quintessential Bordeaux experience that is both approachable and deeply rewarding. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Saint-Émilion region.
Quite enjoyable! A classic Right Bank Bordeaux. A bit fruit-forward for my usual taste, but those cedar notes are lovely. Needs some lamb! 4 stars.
