Description

The Villa Girardi 'Bure Alto' Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore is a masterful expression of the traditional Ripasso method, often affectionately dubbed 'baby Amarone' by connoisseurs for its ability to capture the opulence and complexity of its famous, more expensive sibling. Hailing from the historic Valpolicella Classico region in Northern Italy, this wine is produced by the esteemed Villa Girardi estate, founded in 1986 by the Tommasi family within a magnificent 18th-century Venetian villa.

The winemaking process is what truly sets this bottle apart. After the initial fermentation, the wine is re-fermented on the fresh, nutrient-rich pomace (grape skins) leftover from the production of Amarone. This second fermentation imparts deep intensity, structure, and a velvety texture to the wine, while also deepening its color and flavor profile. Following this, the wine matures for 18 months in large 65 hl Slavonian oak casks, a traditional method that allows for gradual aging and softening of the tannins without overwhelming the fruit with excessive new-oak flavors.

Upon pouring, you are greeted with a deep, intense ruby red color that hints at the concentration within. The nose is inviting and complex, offering a rich bouquet of macerated black cherry, plum, and dried fruit, perfectly accented by savory spice notes of black pepper, clove, and a whisper of cocoa and vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet elegant, showcasing a beautiful balance between ripe fruit sweetness and the fresh, lively acidity that is characteristic of the region’s best wines. The finish is long and satisfying, wrapped in soft, well-integrated tannins that leave a lasting, pleasant impression.

This wine is a superb companion for the table. Its structure and savory depth make it an ideal pairing for hearty meat dishes, such as slow-braised veal tenderloin, game, or rich pasta dishes with a mushroom and pancetta ragu. It also stands up exceptionally well to aged cheeses. To experience the Bure Alto at its best, we recommend decanting it for about an hour before serving at a slightly cool room temperature of 16-18°C. Whether you are an enthusiast of Italian reds or looking for a premium, authentic taste of Valpolicella, this bottle offers an exceptional balance of quality, tradition, and value.
