Red wine | Piedmont, Italy
The Zonin Barolo represents a classic expression of one of Italy’s most prestigious and storied viticultural regions: the Langhe in Piedmont. Crafted exclusively from the noble Nebbiolo grape, this wine is known as the 'King of Wines and the Wine of Kings.' It possesses a profound, garnet-red color that reveals its elegance, while its aromatic profile is defined by the iconic Barolo bouquet of dried rose petals, violets, ripe red cherries, and subtle, earthy undertones of tar, leather, and sweet tobacco. On the palate, this wine is structured and powerful, characterized by firm, noble tannins and vibrant acidity that provide it with remarkable aging potential and depth. While it offers complexity and refinement upon release, time in the bottle allows these elements to harmonize, resulting in a silky, velvety texture and a long, lingering finish. This wine is a quintessential partner for rich, savory Italian cuisine. It is designed to stand up to the robust flavors of slow-cooked red meats, braised beef, game dishes, and mushroom-based risottos. Its high acidity and structured tannins make it the perfect companion for dishes featuring truffles—a specialty of the Piedmont region—or aged, sharp cheeses. Whether you are a seasoned collector looking to add a reliable, representative piece to your cellar, or an enthusiast eager to experience the storied tradition of Barolo, the Zonin bottling offers an accessible gateway into this legendary appellation. With its history dating back to 1821, the Zonin family has long been dedicated to preserving the integrity of Italian wine culture, and this Barolo stands as a testament to their commitment to quality and regional authenticity. Serve it slightly cool, decant it for at least an hour to allow it to breathe and fully awaken, and enjoy the unfolding layers of complexity that make Nebbiolo one of the world's most captivating varieties.
Wow, a proper Barolo! The tannins are definitely present, as expected, but those cherry and rose notes are lovely. I'd pair this with osso buco. Learning to love Nebbiolo!
