Red wine | Mendoza, Argentina
El Enemigo Malbec is a remarkable collaboration between Alejandro Vigil, the renowned winemaker of Catena Zapata, and historian Adrianna Catena. Born in the high-altitude vineyards of Gualtallary in Mendoza, Argentina, this wine reflects a philosophy of restraint and respect for the land, intentionally moving away from the heavy-handed extraction sometimes seen in the region.
This 2021 vintage is a masterclass in balance. Typically composed of about 90% Malbec blended with a touch of Cabernet Franc and sometimes Petit Verdot, it thrives in the deep, rocky, limestone-rich soils at nearly 1,500 meters above sea level. This unique terroir imparts a distinctive mineral tension and a refined, chalky texture that sets it apart from more conventional Malbecs.
On the nose, you are greeted by an aromatic bouquet of fresh black fruits—notably blackberry and plum—intertwined with elegant floral notes of violets and lavender, supported by a subtle, savory backbone of leather, graphite, and cocoa. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet remarkably silky and light-footed, with fine-grained tannins that provide structure without fatigue. The finish is long and persistent, leaving behind a refreshing, slightly spicy impression that invites another sip.
Because of its structural integrity and lively acidity, this wine is incredibly versatile at the dinner table. It is an ideal companion for traditional Argentine grilled meats like asado, but its savory, mineral edge makes it equally suited for lamb chops, roasted pork, or even rich mushroom-based stews. For the best experience, we recommend decanting this wine for at least one hour before serving at 16–18°C. This allows the wine to fully express its complex layers and soft, velvety mouthfeel, making it a perfect selection for those who appreciate a wine that tells a story of both history and terroir.
A refreshing change from typical jammy Malbecs! It has a lovely mineral grip and floral elegance. Think of it as the refined cousin to a bold Cahors. Perfect for a cozy steak dinner.
