Description

El Enemigo Malbec 2022 is a masterpiece of modern winemaking, born from the ambitious partnership between renowned winemaker Alejandro Vigil—the mastermind behind Catena Zapata’s success—and historian Adrianna Catena. The name 'El Enemigo' (The Enemy) stems from the philosophical idea that at the end of our journey, the only battle we truly remember is the one we fought against ourselves. This wine is a testament to that struggle and triumph, crafted with a dedication to purity and the unique, high-altitude terroir of Gualtallary in Mendoza’s Uco Valley.

Sourced from vineyards reaching elevations of nearly 1,500 meters, this Malbec benefits from a cool climate and calcium-rich, rocky soils, which impart a distinct freshness and a sophisticated, chalky minerality that sets it apart from more conventional, 'jammy' Malbecs. While predominantly Malbec, the inclusion of 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot provides an elegant, spicy structure and floral complexity that makes every sip dynamic. The wine is fermented using indigenous yeasts and aged for 15 months, primarily in 100-year-old oak foudres, allowing the authentic character of the fruit to take center stage without being overwhelmed by new oak.

In the glass, it presents an intense, deep ruby color. The bouquet is aromatic and inviting, opening with vibrant notes of ripe blackberries and dark plums, seamlessly layered with subtle nuances of violets, wild herbs, and a whisper of cracked black pepper. On the palate, it is medium-to-full-bodied with a velvety, smooth texture and a lively acidity that keeps it fresh and remarkably drinkable. The finish is long, savory, and refined, leaving an impression of elegance and precision.

This is an exceptionally versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. It is a classic companion to Argentine favorites like grilled steak, lamb chops, or slow-roasted pork. Its savory depth and structured tannins also make it a fantastic match for mushroom-based stews, aged cheeses like Manchego, or even smoked barbecue ribs. Whether you are hosting a formal dinner or a casual backyard gathering, El Enemigo Malbec offers a sophisticated experience that delivers world-class quality at an accessible price, making it a must-have for any wine enthusiast’s cellar.

Your Notes

A sophisticated Malbec! Much fresher than the jammy ones I usually avoid. The floral notes and spice make it elegant. Reminds me of a good Bordeaux, but with Argentine soul. Great with steak.
