Description

Bodegas Muga, nestled in the historic Barrio de La Estación in Haro, Rioja Alta, is a benchmark of quality and tradition. Founded in 1932, the family-run winery is celebrated for its commitment to classic winemaking methods, even operating its own cooperage to craft their French and American oak barrels. The Muga Blanco is a testament to this philosophy, offering a modern, sophisticated expression of Rioja's indigenous white grape varieties: Viura, Malvasía, and Garnacha Blanca.

This 2024 vintage is a vibrant, textured white wine that challenges the perception of Rioja solely as a red wine region. Following a gentle maceration, the wine undergoes fermentation in small wooden vats and new French oak casks, sourced from the Nevers region. After fermentation, it is aged for four months on its fine lees with regular bâtonnage, a technique that imparts a silky, creamy mouthfeel while protecting the wine from oxidation and adding layers of complexity.

On the nose, the wine presents a complex bouquet of white blossoms, ripe stone fruits like peach and nectarine, and subtle, elegant whispers of vanilla from the oak. On the palate, this complexity continues, with a lively, well-defined acidity that is perfectly balanced by the wine's volume and texture. Notes of lemon zest and citrus fruit are beautifully complemented by a delicate, mineral-driven salinity that extends the finish, leaving a fresh, vibrant, and elegant impression.

This is an exceptionally versatile wine that makes for a perfect companion at the table. Its structured yet fresh profile makes it an ideal match for grilled fish, fresh shellfish, and classic seafood paella. Its elegance and refreshing finish also make it a fantastic choice to enjoy on its own as an aperitif on a sunny terrace. Whether you are hosting a formal dinner or a relaxed weekend lunch, the Muga Blanco offers a refined, harmonious drinking experience that showcases the best of Rioja's viticultural heritage.
