Red wine | Rioja, Spain
Bodegas Muga is an iconic institution located in the historic Barrio de la Estación in Haro, the heart of Rioja Alta. Founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga and Aurora Caño, this family-owned estate remains a beacon of traditional winemaking, famously being the only winery in Spain to operate its own cooperage. Their commitment to quality is uncompromising, employing artisanal techniques like egg white fining and long aging in oak barrels crafted on-site from French and American wood. The 2022 Muga Reserva is a quintessential expression of the estate’s philosophy, harmoniously blending the classic Rioja trio of Tempranillo, Garnacha, and a touch of Graciano and Mazuelo. This vintage showcases a deep, ruby-red color and a complex, alluring nose dominated by ripe black fruits, sweet vanilla, leather, and subtle balsamic nuances. On the palate, it is remarkably structured and opulent, offering a sumptuous core of rich black fruit, plum, and spice, supported by fine, silky tannins that promise excellent longevity. Muga's dedication to using indigenous yeasts and traditional wooden vats results in a wine that is both powerful and elegantly balanced—a true 'purebred' Rioja that feels both timeless and sophisticated. This wine is an incredibly versatile partner for the table. Its structure and depth make it a natural companion for traditional Spanish cuisine; it pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops, hearty bean stews, roasted suckling pig, or cured charcuterie like Jamón Ibérico. For a more modern approach, it elevates a perfectly cooked ribeye steak or mature sheep's milk cheeses. Whether you are building a cellar or looking for the perfect bottle to open tonight, the Muga Reserva 2022 is a brilliant ambassador for the Rioja region, offering a drinking experience that balances historic tradition with impeccable modern craftsmanship. We highly recommend decanting this bottle for about 30 minutes before serving to allow its aromatic layers to fully unfold. With its impressive balance, this wine is approachable now but possesses the structure to evolve gracefully in your cellar over the next decade.
Wow, quite complex! I get the dark fruit and a hint of vanilla. Tannins are present but silky. Good balance, and seems like it could age well. Very enjoyable.
