White wine | Alentejo, Évora, Portugal
Pêra-Manca is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious and exceptional wines produced in Portugal. Crafted by the historic Fundação Eugénio de Almeida at the Cartuxa winery in Évora, this white wine is a true testament to the Alentejo region's potential for producing world-class white wines. The 2023 vintage is a masterful blend of the indigenous Antão Vaz and Arinto grape varieties. The Antão Vaz brings body, structure, and notes of tropical fruit, while the Arinto provides the essential freshness, vibrant acidity, and citrus lift. The winemaking process is meticulous: after hand-harvesting and careful selection, the must undergoes fermentation in both stainless steel vats and French oak barrels, followed by 12 months of maturation on fine lees with regular bâtonnage to enhance texture. An additional 9 months of aging in the bottle before release ensures that the wine reaches the market with remarkable balance and integration. In the glass, it displays a bright straw-yellow color. The nose is refined and complex, offering a bouquet of citrus zest, ripe peach, and melon, layered with floral hints of jasmine and subtle toast from the oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet elegant, balancing a creamy mouthfeel with a precise, refreshing acidity. The finish is remarkably long, saline, and persistent, showcasing the granitic soil's influence on the wine's character. This wine is an excellent companion to fine dining. It pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes, such as grilled sea bass or lobster, as well as creamy risottos, roast chicken with herbs, or high-quality soft cheeses like Serra da Estrela. Whether shared as an aperitif to impress guests or enjoyed with a sophisticated meal, Pêra-Manca Branco stands as a monument to Portuguese viticulture, offering both immediate pleasure and the structure required for graceful bottle aging.
