Red wine | Alentejo, Portugal
Pêra-Manca Tinto is widely considered one of Portugal's most legendary and prestigious wines. Produced by the Fundação Eugénio de Almeida at the historic Cartuxa winery in Évora, Alentejo, this wine is not made every year. It is only produced in exceptional vintages when the grapes—a blend of Aragonêz and Trincadeira—meet the strict quality standards required for the Pêra-Manca label. Its history is deeply intertwined with Portugal; the wine is famously associated with the voyages of discovery, specifically being carried on the ships of Pedro Álvares Cabral when he discovered Brazil in 1500.
From a technical perspective, the wine is crafted with meticulous care. The grapes are sourced from selected plots with vines over 30 years old. Following fermentation in oak vats, it undergoes a long maceration period and is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. To ensure its legendary complexity and balance, the wine is further aged in the bottle within the cellars of the Cartuxa Monastery for several years before release. This rigorous process results in a wine that is full-bodied, structured, and exceptionally elegant, known for its refined tannins, freshness, and a persistent, long finish. Aromatically, you will find profound notes of ripe dark fruits, plums, raisins, along with subtle hints of tobacco, leather, spices, and the sophisticated character imparted by its careful aging in oak.
This is a wine designed for the long haul; it has immense aging potential and will continue to evolve gracefully in the bottle for many years. When it comes to food pairing, its structure and complexity make it an ideal companion for robust and sophisticated dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted red meats, game (such as venison), aged cheeses, or complex, savory dishes like a traditional Portuguese 'cozido' or rich meat-based risottos. Serving it at a temperature of 16-18°C and allowing it to breathe for at least an hour before consumption will help reveal its full spectrum of aromas and flavors, ensuring the best possible experience for this truly iconic Portuguese masterpiece.
