Description

Porto Ferreira Ruby is an iconic expression of one of Portugal’s most historic and respected wine houses. Founded in 1751, Ferreira has been a cornerstone of the Douro region for over 250 years, famously championed by the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, whose legacy of quality and dedication remains the soul of the brand. This Ruby Port is a classic, crafted to capture the vibrant, fruit-forward essence of the Douro Valley. It is produced using traditional Port winemaking methods: hand-harvested grapes are softly crushed and fermented with maceration to extract deep color and structure. The process is carefully controlled, with wine alcohol added at the perfect moment to halt fermentation, preserving the grape's natural sweetness. The resulting wine is aged in large oak casks for an average of three years, allowing it to develop its characteristic richness while maintaining its fresh, youthful vitality.

In the glass, it reveals a brilliant, intense ruby hue. On the nose, it is immediately expressive, offering generous aromas of very ripe red and black fruits, such as plum and cherry, complemented by subtle, elegant spice notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied and exceptionally balanced; the sweetness is perfectly held in check by a firm but smooth tannin structure, leading to a long, clean, and attractive finish.

Why choose this wine? Ferreira Ruby is the ultimate 'versatile' Port. It does not require decanting and is ready to enjoy the moment you pull the cork. It is an impeccable companion for after-dinner indulgence. Pair it with rich, decadent desserts like chocolate tarts, creamy caramel custard, or coffee-based treats. It also holds its own alongside a platter of aged, bold cheeses or blue cheese, where its sweetness provides a beautiful counterpoint to the saltiness of the cheese. Whether you are hosting a formal dinner or simply relaxing after a long day, this wine brings a touch of classic Portuguese excellence to your glass, representing a heritage that has defined Port wine for generations.

Your Notes

A rich, vibrant classic. Far from my usual light reds, but its jammy dark fruit is lovely. Pair this with a bold Roquefort or dark chocolate; it’s a perfect, decadent way to end a meal.
